Serenity inside.

Bait Aziza is inspired by the color, light, shadow, form, and texture found on the streets of Tunis village, Fayoum. The house humbly blends in with Fayoum’s character yet stands out through the depth of its exterior, without giving any hints to the personality of its interior. One of the most prominent aspects of the design is the inviting inner court that brings the natural outdoors into the enclosed and private space. The openings allow for visual tracking of light throughout the day; the flood of natural light and views of nature are key to the strategic use of glass throughout the project. They are also designed to maximize natural ventilation in summer and maximize sunlight in winter. As Tunis village is known for its pottery, many relics of popular culture and symbols are found throughout the house creating a vibrant artistic expression. The eyes want to collaborate with the other senses. All the senses, including vision, can be regarded as extensions of the sense of touch thus making the choice of materials a very important aspect in the design. The house has stone foundations, rammed earth walls all covered with a light shade of clay plastering, wooden and reed ceilings, flooring of stones and clay tiles. The main approach in this design is to reflect our traditional building techniques yet create experiential contemporary architecture.
